Central Ward candidates’ views on Riverwalk

A key issue for voters in Brisbane’s Central Ward is the reconstruction of the section of Riverwalk washed away in last year’s flood. Despite funding for reconstruction being provided by the state and federal government, the current Council has refused to commence construction until more than two years after the flood, with completion not scheduled until 2014, three years after the flood.

We wrote to the three candidates for the Ward in tomorrow’s Brisbane City Council election seeking their views and support for a more timely reconstruction of this important piece of inner-city transport infrastructure. ALP candidate Heather Beattie and Greens candidate Rachael Jacobs both responded promptly, expressing their concern about the delay, and their intentions to try to bring forward reconstruction. We have not yet received a response from LNP candidate Vicki Howard.
