A few months back we posted about the potential for disruption to cycling on the Stanley Street footpath posed by the construction of the new Queensland Children’s Hospital. The developer applied to close the southern footpath for the duration of the project, but CBD BUG lobbied Council to keep the footpath open. Although there are bike lanes on Stanley Street, the heavy traffic and range of desired cycle routes and crossings means that many cyclists find it safer or more convenient to use the footpath, particularly on the southern side of Stanley Street. We’re glad to say that Council has listened to us and agreed the developer must keep the footpath open.
Although this is great news for many south-side cyclists, the Queensland Children’s Hospital construction continues to pose challenges for us. Bike lane closures and queuing trucks are two issues we’ve heard about from members and will continue to pursue with Council and the developers. If you come across any such obstructions be sure to report it to the BCC call centre and CBD BUG.
